DICTION

You will always know my insomnia nights which are many. I was exhausted from staying up late watching election results last night so I was certain that I would be in bed by 9. No luck. Too many thoughts and ideas and plans for the candidates I want to support. Also, just one of those random nights.

So, I'm watching Letterman and it's a re-run from June where Jayzee and MNM (I don't think it's M&M but I'm not sure) are promoting the fund raising concerts they did in Detroit and other cities (I have an affinity for Detroit and I must confess that I don't remember where else.)

While I am proud of what they are doing and I know they will raise a lot of money, I opened my mind as my son always encourages me to do (with no little amount of chastisement) and watched the rooftop concert.

I have no hearing difficulties. I can hear the Rockies game at medium volume from two rooms away. I can understand every word of every song that Frank Sinatra ever sang.

I will put one of my all time heroes, Bette Midler, in the park with these two guys. Why can't you pull the microphone away from your mouth and enunciate your consonants so that we can understand what the F*** you are saying???? I can't tell you how many Bette songs I had to listen to again and again in order to make certain I had the words right before I put it in my show. Yeah, I did everything on the fly and by ear. Another story for another day. She used to drive me crazy because I just loved her (and still do) but her diction sucked.

Rapper guys, I would LOVE to hear your message. I just don't want have to listen to your piece, whatever it may be, a dozen times before I decipher the words.

Don't give me the crap line that you have to talk so quickly that the words get blurred. Barbra Streisand once did a hilarious rendition of the "Minute Waltz" and I guarantee that she uttered every word at least as quickly as you guys do. But every word was understood. I laughed my ass off and still wish I could pull that rendition of that song off.

Both of you are good people with good things in your heart and something important to say. How about making your message accessible to everyone? I know that my 35 year old son thinks the world of both of you but I would challenge him that if he and I sat in a room and listened to a new offering from either of you on equal ground...first listen...that he could understand all the words.

You have a message. Why not clearly and concisely communicate that message? Would it take that much more effort to enunciate? Could you not be the kings of hip hop or rap or whatever you call it now, but also the kings of elocution? You're smart enough to be both. Just sayin'...
